Bondhu

The State of West Bengal had already been hit hard by the pandemic COVID – 19 and the occurrence of super cyclone Amphan devasted it further. It has caused widespread destruction all over the state of West Bengal, especially in the delta region of the state – Sunderbans.

In the districts of Sunderbans, thousands of human beings and animals have been lost their houses and have been rendered without the basic amenities.

In order to help the people of Sunderban who are still reeling from the effects of the cyclone, recover and lead them back to their daily lifestyle, Rotaract Club of Barrackpore had undertaken the project Bondhu.

We collaborated with Homegeniee Club, KolkataR Colombus, Om Puri Foundation in order to execute the project. We also had Rotaract Club of SilverCity Mohali, from RID 3080 hosting the event along with us.

The Project was divided in three phases :

Phase 1:

With the help of Om Puri Foundation, we reached out to 73 different individuals whose families had been affected due to the cyclone and had directly deposited money in their bank accounts. Mrs. Nandita Puri, wife of veteran actor Late Shri Om Puri, had taken it upon herself to ensure that the money reached to all the beneficiaries. She successfully helped in the deposition of Rs. 1000/- to each of these families on 31st May

Phase 2 :

Through our project Sneher Porosh we had adopted a school in Kultoli, Malpara, Sunderban in the beginning of the year and since then we have taken care of all the needs of the children and the teachers of the school. Due to the cyclone, the school had undergone structural damages in the roof and that in turn had hindered the educational process of the children. Therefore, Rotaract Club of Barrackpore had decided to help in the reconstruction of the school building. We raised the funds from our families and friends and we hope our humble attempt will help the children to take a step further with regard to their academic prospects.

Phase 3:

For the third phase we plan on distributing ration to 300 families in the Pathorprotima area of Sunderban and feed 200 animals in the same area. We also plan to repair the destroyed houses by distributing tarpaulins. This phase is scheduled to take place in the month of June.

We hope our efforts will help to lead them back to normalcy.
